History of Udaipur

The history of states that it was established by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1568 after being defeated by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in Chittor. As the defeat meant losing his seat of power, Udai Singh II started looking for a place to re-establish his base. Legend has it that the king met a holy man meditating on the hill overlooking the beautiful Pichola Lake during one of his hunting expeditions. This hermit blessed the king and advised him to build a palace on the very spot, as it would be well protected. The king followed the advice and in course of time, the beautiful city of came into being near the Pichola Lake.

Maharana Pratap Singh took over the reins after the death of Jai Singh. And tried his best to defend his city from all sorts of external aggression.
